The microphone is a key element in getting good audio for broadcast.

There are two options:

  • a desk-mounted microphone on an adjustable arm (Anglepoise) or shockmount
  • a headset-mounted mic (combined earphones and mic)

Broadcast studios use arm-mounted mics, but they are in a very quiet, studio environment used by people who know how to keep their head still! If your people are experienced broadcasters and you have a studio/broadcast room think about a boom mic which can give a richer, fuller tone to the sound. There are some beautiful mics now coming from the Far East which perform as well as European-made ones costing £500; you will still need a pair of headphones to hear the broadcaster’s end.

For many people a combined mic and headphones headset will be easier to manage and there are several options on offer, one of the most popular is the Beyer DT297.

BEYER DT297

The lightweight, closed DT 297 PV headset has been developed for professional broadcasting use.

The headphone is featuring an efficient neodymium magnet system, a very high reproduction precision and an optimised speech reproduction for an excellent intelligibility. Another special feature is the wide transmission range of 10 - 30, 000 Hz. The headsets come with 80 ohm or 250 ohm systems, and a cable giving an XLR and 1/4” jack plug.

This headset is equipped with a bigger capsule with an improved bass response. The microphone can be optimally positioned with the flexible gooseneck. The optimum distance to the mouth is around 5 to 10 cm.

The frequency response for this distance corresponds to recommendations of the IRT (Institute for Radiotechnology in Munich). The soft circumaural earcaps and the fully adjustable padded headband offer a high wearing comfort.

The cardioid polar pattern guarantees high-gain-before feedback and noise cancellation. The wide transmission range enables a clear and precise speech transmission with a high syllable articulation.

The cables to the earcaps run safely in the headband.

All parts such as earpads, headband and gooseneck microphone are easy to replace.
